Magic Squares – Helene Knott

One day class – Friday
Confident beginner and up - $65.00

A ‘Magic Square’ is a mathematical puzzle in which squares in a grid are numbered so that the total of any row or column equals the same number.  This 3-D optical illusion quilt is made from units assembled in a similar fashion to create a random three dimensional effect.  There are two variations of the pattern, a four –unit version that will make a quilt that measures 48” x 64” (without borders) and the five-unit version yields a 56” x 80” top (without borders).  The 3-D blocks are pieced in a nifty ‘cheater’ method that makes constructing the top a breeze.  With careful attention to color and value, this quilt will have a graphic architectural and three dimensional effects but is much easier to construct than most 3-D patterns.  The name Magic Squares is a play on the name of a mathematical puzzle in which a grid of numbers adds up to an identical sum when added in any direction.  This quilt constructed of repeated ‘units’ that create a random effect but go easily together without the use of partial seams. (This class will be held at the 4H building).

 Supply List

bullet

Sewing machine along with basic accessories:  Extra needles, bobbins, etc.

bullet

Thread:  100% cotton in a color to match your darker fabric.

bullet

Rotary cutter, mat and ruler:  A 24” cutting ruler and a large mat is the best for cutting the long strips and squaring your blocks.  Make sure your cutter has a new sharp blade in it.

bullet

12½” squaring ruler:  Omni-Grid makes a non-slip version called an Omni-Grip (printed with bright green lines).  This ruler is strongly recommended but a regular 12 ½” square ruler will do as long as it has a 45 degree diagonal guideline from one corner to another and is coated with a non-slip product such as Invisi-Grip.

bullet

Small pair of scissors or thread snips.

bullet

Seam ripper.

bullet

A mechanical pencil and a white quilters’ pencil (or a chalk roller).

bullet

Sewing pins.

bullet

 Flannel for a design wall.

bullet

Iron and ironing pad/board.

bullet

 Plug strip/extension cord.

Fabrics:   The yardage given is for a twin sized quilt measuring approximately 64”x 90” including 5” borders. Please note; the yardage given for the blocks is somewhat generous to allow for shrinkage, straightening edges and cutting mistakes, you will probably have fabric left over.  For the best results, choose a light fabric and a dark fabric for each side of the blocks.

12” blocks - fabric ‘A’ and ‘B’:  1 yard each of a light and a dark fabric.

8” blocks - fabric ‘C’ and ‘D’:  1½ yard each of a light and a dark fabric.

4” blocks - fabric ‘E’ and ‘F’:  1¼ yard each of a light and a dark fabric.

Narrow framing strip:  ½ yard of a color that contrasts well with both the light and dark fabrics and reads more or less like a solid.

Border:  1¼ yard.
