Beginning Machine Quilt

Two day class – Monday and Tuesday
Beginner - $130.00

This class was designed with the true beginner in mind, a lecture and hands-on workshop on free-motion quilting.  This workshop will cover layering, basting, threads, batting, and how to manipulate the quilt, plus the best designs for your quilts.  Heavy emphasis is on designs that do not have to be marked.  (This class will be held at the 4H building).

Supply List

Beginning students will use a prepared kit to learn the basics of free-motion quilting.

bulletYou must have a darning foot for your machine!  Please put it on the machine and make sure it fits, and works properly.
bulletSewing machine in excellent working order.

bullet“The book” of instructions that came with your machine.
bulletColored thread (100% cotton) and a bobbin of the same color.
bulletSafety pins (about 10 size 0 brass are best).
bulletScissors, pencil, and paper to write on.
bulletAn extra needle for your machine (or two or three) (size 90/14 Sharp or Quilting).
bulletQuilter’s gloves or something similar for hand abrasion.
bullet2 yards muslin/batting.
bulletThere is a $5.00 lab fee for the kit for this class (muslin/batting).
bulletRequired text for the class:  Show Me How to Machine Quilt, by Kathy Sandbach.

The most important part of this class is the darning foot!  Try it out on your machine before coming to class.  Most sewing machine stores can order a darning foot for almost any machine.  Start early if you don’t have one-sometimes it takes a month or more to get the right one.  Note:  Sometimes they know this foot as the “free-motion foot” or the “quilting foot”-but it is NOT the walking foot.  Students are encouraged to bring one quilt top to class to discuss possible quilting designs…as time allows.
